How often should an office be cleaned?

There is no single legal frequency for office cleaning. The right answer depends on how many people use the space, how often, and which rooms you have. Here is how to decide.

A practical rule of thumb

Office useSuggested frequency
Fewer than 10 people, a few days a week1 to 2 cleans a week, plus washroom checks
10 to 30 people, most days3 cleans a week
30 or more people, every dayDaily (5 cleans a week)
Busy building, heavy visitor trafficDaily, plus daytime janitorial cover

Rooms that need cleaning every working day

Whatever the overall frequency, shared washrooms and kitchens should be cleaned every day they are used. These are where hygiene problems and complaints start.

Hybrid working

If most people come in on the same two or three days, clean on the evenings after those days and reduce the rest. Paying for daily cleaning of floors nobody used is a common waste. Match the schedule to your actual occupancy and review it every quarter.

Rotate the deeper tasks

High-level dusting, skirting boards and glass do not need doing every visit. A good schedule spreads them across the month so the building never falls behind. See the office cleaning checklist for a full breakdown.

FAQ

Quick answers

Should an office be cleaned every day?

Offices with 30 or more people in most days usually need daily cleaning. Smaller or less busy offices can work well with two or three cleans a week, as long as washrooms and kitchens are cleaned on every working day.

Does hybrid working reduce cleaning costs?

It can. Cleaning after your busiest days and reducing the rest often lowers costs without lowering standards.
