School and college cleaning: term-time and holiday schedules

Schools and colleges have a cleaning year shaped by terms and holidays, and safeguarding duties that apply to everyone on site. Here is how to plan it.

Term time

Classrooms, corridors, washrooms and dining areas are cleaned daily after pupils leave. Washrooms and dining areas may need extra checks during the day.

Holidays

Longer holidays are the time for deep cleans: carpet extraction, floor scrubbing and resealing, high-level dusting, and cleaning of furniture and equipment. Summer is usually the biggest programme, planned around any building works.

Safeguarding

Contractors working in schools must meet the school's safeguarding requirements. In England, schools follow the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education. Criminal record checks are made through the DBS in England and Wales, Disclosure Scotland in Scotland and AccessNI in Northern Ireland. Where possible, cleaning is scheduled outside pupil hours.

Working around the timetable

Exam halls, sports facilities and lettings in the evenings and at weekends all affect when areas can be cleaned. Build them into the specification.
