Gym and leisure centre cleaning

Members judge a gym by its changing rooms. Cleaning in fitness and leisure sites has to keep up with heavy use across long opening hours.

Changing rooms and showers

Changing rooms, toilets and showers need cleaning at least daily and checking several times a day at busy sites. Floors in wet areas need regular deep cleaning to remove body fats and soap residue, which build up and make surfaces slippery.

Equipment and studios

Members usually wipe equipment after use, but a daily clean of benches, handles, mats and touchscreens is still needed. Studio floors need the right method for the surface, such as sprung timber or rubber.

Reception and social areas

Entrances, receptions, cafés and seating areas set the first impression and follow a normal front-of-house schedule.

Water hygiene

Showers that are rarely used can allow Legionella bacteria to grow. HSE guidance on Legionella control (L8) covers managing water systems, including flushing little-used outlets. This is part of the site's water management plan, and cleaners can carry out and record flushing where the plan assigns it.

Timing

With early and late opening, cleaning is often split between an overnight deep clean and daytime attendants.

Pool water treatment and plant rooms are specialist areas outside a cleaning contract.
