Hard floor care for commercial buildings

Different hard floors need different care. The wrong product or method can make a floor slippery, dull or permanently damaged. Here is how to look after the main types found in commercial buildings.

Sheet vinyl

Daily mopping with a neutral cleaner, plus periodic machine scrubbing. Some vinyl floors are finished with a polish that needs stripping and re-applying when worn.

Safety flooring

Slip-resistant safety flooring is common in kitchens, washrooms and clinical areas. Manufacturers generally advise against polish, because it can fill the surface texture and reduce slip resistance. Machine scrubbing with the right brush keeps it clean.

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT)

Use pH-neutral cleaners and avoid harsh strippers and excess water at the joints. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance guide, as some have factory finishes that should not be stripped.

Natural stone

Marble, limestone and travertine are sensitive to acids. Use pH-neutral stone cleaners only; acidic products can etch the surface. Polished stone may need periodic honing and sealing by a specialist.

Sealed concrete and resin

Common in warehouses and industrial units. Machine scrubbing with a scrubber-dryer is the most efficient method for large areas.

Keeping floors safe

Use warning signs while floors are wet, clean in sections so a dry route is always available, and make sure the cleaning method suits the floor's slip resistance.
